Data-led Creativity: A Visualization & Storytelling Workshop
Curricula & convenings · Üretimhane · ERG · TÜSEV · 2024
This six-hour introductory workshop pairs data literacy with creative confidence and narrative strategy with modular information design. First designed for Üretimhane and later adapted for ERG and TÜSEV teams, it asks participants to consider who the data should move, what it should change, and how it should act before choosing a chart.
The workshop frames data visualization not as a neutral production process beginning with chart choice, but as an information-design practice requiring creative courage and behavioral intent. The trio of who, what, and how sets the rhetoric of the story; connection, visual, and arrangement dimensions decompose it into reusable modules. Exercises in color and legend design then reveal visual encoding as cognitive-access infrastructure rather than decoration.
Creative courage before analysis
The opening deliberately lowers the threshold of technical expertise: starting small, seeking inspiration, and treating imperfection as part of learning make creative work with data accessible.
Turning data literacy into play
Ordinal, nominal, interval, and ratio data become characters, moving classification out of abstract terminology and into a memorable visual coding system.
Defining behavioral intent before the chart
Who identifies the audience, what establishes context and tone, and how chooses the visual method that can turn available data into action. The story is designed not only to be understood, but to produce a response.
Decomposing visualization into reusable modules
Connection, visuality, and arrangement are treated as distinct decision layers; examples of quantity, position, and relationship show how the same data can become different visual sentences.
Treating color and legends as cognitive infrastructure
Shape, size, tone, and color scales become letters in a visual alphabet; the legend exercise lowers the cost of decoding them and turns a complex chart into a readable system.
